The Stratosphere Classic Overdrive is a pedal that is based on the original Maxon OD-808 and Ibanez TS-808 (narrow box) from 1979. This version of the Tube Screamer used two dual op-amps instead of bipolar transistors for the input and output buffers. The op-amps used in this pedal are MC1458/LM1458, which are similar to the JRC4558D but not exactly the same.
The component values in the Stratosphere Classic Overdrive are exactly the same as the original Tube Screamer, so there won’t be a noticeable tonal difference between the two. However, if you prefer a vintage flavor and want a pedal with fewer frills, the Stratosphere Classic Overdrive is a great option.
Aion FX, the company behind the Stratosphere Classic Overdrive, traced Maxon’s 35th anniversary reissue of the OD-808 in 2021 to ensure accuracy. They compared it with photos of original units and made sure to correct any errors in earlier community schematics. The JFET switching circuitry was removed correctly, and the circuit was converted to true bypass.
Overall, the Stratosphere Classic Overdrive is a faithful adaptation of the original 1979 circuit of the Tube Screamer, providing vintage tone and accurate representation of the classic pedal.
