The Aion FX version of the Supreaux amplifier adaptation uses JFETs to replace the tube stages, similar to the JHS Superbolt pedal. The JFETs used in the circuit are J201s, which are typically difficult to find in a through-hole format. To make it easier for DIY hobbyists, Aion FX offers J201s in surface mount device (SMD) format that have been pre-soldered to adapters, allowing them to be used as through-hole parts.
The Aion FX version also incorporates the modifications made by JHS in the first version of the Superbolt, including biasing the JFETs for 18V operation and adding an on-board charge pump for 18V operation from a 9V supply. This modification allows for increased headroom and dynamic range in the circuit.
It’s worth noting that the Aion FX version of the Supreaux is more accurately considered a clone of the Superbolt pedal rather than the original Supreaux amplifier. If you’re interested in building the original Supreaux circuit, you can refer to the build notes provided by Aion FX for more details.
