Tone Ripper by Fuzzdog
The Tone Ripper is a hybrid Si/Ge fuzz pedal that aims to add a sinister and aggressive tone to your guitar. It is based on a 3-knob Tone Bender, but with some modifications. Instead of using two germanium transistors, it features a single high-gain silicon can, which provides a different character to the sound. However, it still incorporates a final-stage germanium transistor to retain the warm growl that is typically associated with a full silicon circuit. This pedal is known for its aggressive nature, which may surprise users who are familiar with the more traditional 3-knob Tone Bender. Despite its intensity, it still offers the versatility and responsiveness that made the original Tone Bender a favorite among guitarists. Additionally, it can be easily cleaned up by adjusting the guitar’s volume control, making it suitable for stoner rock genres. The Tone Ripper is designed for board-mounted pots with round shafts, although it can be wired with ‘normal’ splined shafts if preferred. Some users may appreciate its large enclosure, while others may find it excessive. Please note that there is a small hack required for the current version of the pedal. A ceramic cap next to the ribbon cable needs to be positioned between the IN and GND pads. This issue will be resolved in future versions of the pedal, but for now, it is a minor inconvenience that does not warrant discarding the current batch of pedals. The partial kit includes the PCB, all board-mounted components, and pots.
