The Wyvern Silicon Drive is a rare transistor overdrive pedal that is based on the Dinosaural Tube Bender. Originally designed as a DIY project and kit by Guitar Magazine (UK) in 2003, it was later tweaked and commercially produced by Dan Coggins of Dinosaural. Only around 140 units were made before production ceased in 2007, with an additional 12 units built in 2016.
The Tube Bender, despite its low production numbers, found its way into the hands of several musicians and producers in the UK, including Snow Patrol. It was designed to have a sound that falls between a Tube Screamer and a Tone Bender, although it does not share any engineering similarities with either of them. While the schematic does resemble other silicon fuzz circuits, the Tube Bender is not voiced like a fuzz pedal.
The Wyvern Silicon Drive is based on the commercial version of the Tube Bender, which was traced by Aion FX in 2020. It can also be built using the earlier magazine version with a few parts substitutions. The only modification in the Wyvern is the addition of a 3-position switch for the Tone Shift, allowing for a third setting in between the other two.
