DigiDelay by Electric Druid

The DigiDelay pedal is a digital delay project that offers up to 4 seconds of delay, with a 12 bit/32KHz input and 16 bit/32KHz output. It features delay trails on/off, clickless effect in/out bypass switching, and a momentary/latching feature on the bypass switch for “echo splashes”. The pedal also includes tap tempo, a tempo LED to indicate echo rate, and an entirely analog dry audio path. The controls include Delay Time, Repeats, and Delay Level, along with High and Low tone filter controls.

The DigiDelay pedal is based on the dsPIC 33FJ64GP802 chip and uses two 23LC1024 1Mbit/128KB serial RAM chips for storage. The initial sampling is done at 12-bit resolution and 32KHz, but all internal processing is 16-bit, with the final output at 16-bit/32KHz. This results in sound quality that is very good without being overly clean or sterile. The only issue is background hiss due to about 10mV of noise produced by the dsPIC’s on-chip DAC. However, this can be improved for guitar-level signals by modifying four resistor values.

The DigiDelay pedal offers five controls: Delay time, Repeats, Delay level, and high and low shelving tone controls for the delay signal. This allows users to sculpt the sound of the repeats. The dry signal remains entirely in the analog domain and is never digitized. The firmware includes buffered bypass rather than a true bypass footswitch for noiseless switching and the option of keeping delay tails. There’s also an “echo splash” feature for adding echoes to a single phrase and tap tempo for setting the delay time. An LED flashes at the current delay rate to provide feedback, and there’s a Sync Output for synchronizing other pedals to the delay rate.
