The EgoDriver, originally released in 2009, has undergone revisions and tweaks over the years. In 2022, the EgoDeath was created as an updated version of the EgoDriver, addressing some of the original design’s shortcomings. The EgoDeath includes several changes and additions.
Firstly, a JFET output buffer has been added to ensure a consistent low impedance output, addressing complaints about the output impedance of the original design.
Secondly, a “Trim” control has been added to reduce the low end at any gain setting. This addresses complaints about the EgoDriver becoming too bassy with the gain dialed up. However, turning up the Trim control will also reduce the total gain, creating a compromise. This feature is particularly useful for neck pickups.
Another change is the ability to switch between hard and soft clipping diodes. This allows for a combination of touch dynamics from hard clipping and smoothness from soft clipping. A dip switch has been included to add germanium diodes in series with the mosfets, softening their turn on voltage.
The controls on the EgoDeath include VOL, TONE, and DRIVE, which are standard overdrive/distortion controls. The TRIM control adjusts the amount of low end in the gain stage. The SC/HC switch selects between hard-clipping mode (stock OCD™ setting) and a slightly softened tone. The POWER control balances between low and high output pickups, with the HI position increasing the output level and brightness. The DIP switch allows for different combinations of germanium diodes for varied coloration.
Overall, the EgoDeath is an updated version of the EgoDriver with added features to address previous design shortcomings and provide more versatility in tone shaping.
