The Hydra Treble Booster is essentially a modified version of the Catalinbread Naga Viper, which itself is based on the classic Dallas Rangemaster circuit. The main difference is that the Hydra uses an NPN silicon transistor instead of the original PNP germanium transistor.
While it is called a treble booster, the Hydra actually falls into the overdrive territory, with a sound that is not quite full-on fuzz but still in the same tradition. It offers a versatile one-knob design, similar to the Rangemaster, but with added flexibility.
The “Range” control on the Hydra allows you to blend the input capacitor, giving you the option to switch between a treble boost and a full-frequency boost. When set fully clockwise, it replicates the stock Rangemaster sound.
Additionally, the Hydra features a “Heat” control, which adjusts the transistor gain and saturation. This allows you to dial back the gain from the fixed full-gain setting of the original Rangemaster. Again, when set fully clockwise, it replicates the stock Rangemaster setup.
Despite the added controls, the Hydra remains a simple circuit with a low parts count, making it suitable for beginners who want to explore the classic sounds of the 1960s.
Overall, the Hydra Treble Booster is a direct adaptation of the Naga Viper, with no modifications or changes. It offers a modified take on the Rangemaster circuit, providing added versatility and flexibility for guitarists seeking that classic vintage sound.
