The Softie is a relay bypass system developed by Function F(x) engineer as an alternative to traditional mechanical switching. It is a low-cost and reliable option with a small footprint. The system is controlled by a pre-programmed PIC to handle all the switching functions. It has a longer shelf life compared to a 3PDT switch.
However, the Softie is not cheaper or easier to use than a 3PDT switch. It is not completely silent and may produce a small “puh” sound when switched to bypass. Unlike other designs that mute the effect output when switched to bypass, the Softie switches instantly without dropping the signal.
If you are concerned about switching noise, it is recommended to consider the CODA bypass system instead. The Softie is relatively quiet, especially when compared to a 3PDT switch, but it may still produce some noise in certain cases.
Overall, the Softie is a reliable and efficient relay bypass system that has been used in many pedals without any reported faults. It offers a cost-effective alternative to mechanical switching and has a longer lifespan. However, it is not completely silent and may produce some switching noise.
